Driving a Porsche is more than getting from A to B. It is emotion. It is a promise that begins with turning the key, firing up the engine and first contact with the steering wheel. A Porsche should steer tight, direct and reliable, as if the car is reading your mind even before you move your hands.
But what happens when that feeling slowly fades? When the precision wears off, the steering wheel feels fuzzy or there is play? For many Porsche classics - such as the 964, 993, 997, 987 and Boxster - is revision often no longer a safe option. The quality of old steering boxes and parts has simply deteriorated too far in recent decades.
At Car Elect in Zeewolde we decided that this should not be the end of the story. On the contrary: we saw a challenge in it. That is why we are developing fully new wheelhouses, through redevelopment and reverse engineering. No compromises, but solutions that bring the soul of the classic back to life.
Why we make new wheelhouses
A Porsche classic car is more than a car - it is heritage on wheels. But heritage requires care and respect. For years, overhaul was the way to breathe new life into steering boxes. Yet we increasingly noticed that the parts used to do so were of too poor quality. Overhauling would become a risk. And we believe that a Porsche should never be a risk.
So we chose a different path. We decided not to repair the wheelhouse, but to recreate it. With reverse engineering we scrutinize every detail: dimensions, tooth profiles, materials, clearances. We analyze, reconstruct and improve where necessary. Not to make something else, but to bring the original back to life in a new, reliable form.
The air-cooled legends: 964 & 993
The 964 and 993 are often cited as the last true air-cooled icons. They are known for their pure driving feel, mechanical honesty and direct contact with the road. Exactly that makes them beloved by enthusiasts worldwide.
And we wanted to preserve exactly that feeling. That is why we developed new wheelhouses for the 964 and 993. Steering boxes that are so faithful to the original that the difference is imperceptible in practice. We have kept the minimal deviations that were technically necessary so subtle that they are not noticeable.
The result? A Porsche 964 or 993 that again steers like it came from the factory yesterday - tight, direct and confident.
