At first glance, many of these systems look very similar, but in reality there is a world of difference, both mechanically and electronically.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Those very nuances make the difference between a trouble-free repair and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auto-elect.nl\/en\/power-steering\/wheelhouse-overhaul\/\">a wheelhouse<\/a> which continues to give error codes after installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An EPS unit consists of five main components:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steering box housing<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric motor (with ball screw)<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic Control Unit (ECU).<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handlebar<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torque\/torque sensor (torque sensor + pinion)<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog, we'll take you through the construction and specifics of VAG EPS steering boxes, with a clear translation to overhaul in practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Differences between steering boxes within the VAG group<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Housings: recognizable, but not interchangeable<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Because of these variations, proper diagnosis is essential because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auto-elect.nl\/en\/blog\/not-every-steering-complaint-can-be-solved-with-overhaul\/\"><strong data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1313\">not every steering complaint can automatically be solved with overhaul<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within VAG steering boxes, you almost always see the same numbers in the casting markings:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <b><i>423 105<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is characteristic of EPS enclosures, but says little about the exact application. The first three characters make the difference:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8K1 \/ 8K2 \u2192 Audi A4 (B8)<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4G1 \/ 4G2 \u2192 Audi A6 platform<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4M1 \/ 4M2 \u2192 Audi Q7 \/ Q8<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if two enclosures are very similar (such as 8K1 and 4G1), they are not simply interchangeable. Consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other length of housing;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divergent spacing between silent blocks;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differences in vehicle weight and chassis width.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, this means: a steering box does not always \u201cfit\u201d mechanically, even if it appears identical.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Electric motor and rotor: small differences, big impact<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The electric motor is a crucial component within the EPS system. Within VAG, we see clear differences between generations and models:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the 4G1 engine is longer than the 8K1.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resolver configurations (number of poles) vary by type.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotors may contain more or fewer magnet rings.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is important to understand: these differences are not just mechanical, they directly affect the control by the ECU.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Handlebar and torque sensor: crucial to steering feel<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within VAG EPS systems, there are two main variants: helical gearing (standard EPS) and straight gearing (Dynamic Steering). This difference seems small, but has major implications, namely: a different gear ratio, a different interpretation of the steering angle and a different torque sensor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ECU is tuned to this. If you combine a wrong rack with an ECU, you will get a deviation between the calculated steering angle (EPS) and the measured steering angle (G85). As soon as this difference becomes too large, an error message immediately follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>ECUs within VAG: hardware equal, software decisive<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within VAG, many ECUs have the same basis <\/span><b><i>909 144<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The differences are in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vehicle coding (8K0, 4G0, 4M0, etc.);<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">software version (last letter);<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communication type (CAN vs. FlexRay).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p>\t            <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"image\" >\n\t    <div class=\"grid-container offset-background\">\n                <div class=\"img-box\">\n\t\t    <figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.auto-elect.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Blog-20-VAG-concern-stuurhuis-ontwerp.jpg\" alt=\"VAG electric steering box (EPS) with visible components such as electric motor, ball screw and rack and pinion.\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>        <\/div>\n\t        <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"text-only left\" >\n        <div class=\"grid-container\">\n        <div class=\"text\">\n        \t\t\t<h2 >Our approach: overhaul of the original steering box<\/h2><p ><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where swap systems used to work well, within VAG we are increasingly seeing restrictions by Software Version Management (SVM). The vehicle checks that software versions match and that components \u201cfit\u201d within the configuration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you install another steering box with different software, the vehicle may generate error codes, block functions or simply not function correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why we deliberately take a different approach: we overhaul only the customer's original steering box. No exchange system - and that is a conscious choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because with that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not get software conflicts;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have no SVM problems;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retains the original coding;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain that everything continues to communicate as intended.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means assembly without surprises, with great advantages in the workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After reinstalling the rebuilt steering box, in most cases all that is needed is: to perform a basic setting. No complex coding, no software modifications and no dealer-dependent procedures.
